Dai Davies of Cosmetic Surgery Partners and Simply Better Breasts on SKY News
Today Dai Davies appeared on SKY News throughout the day discussing PIP implants.
PIP BREAST IMPLANTS ~ WHO SHOULD PAY FOR THEIR REMOVAL?
1. Rupture rate and cancer incidence are red herrings. They mean nothing without knowing how long the prosthesis has been implanted.
2. The real question is; what are the long term effects of industrial silicone being implanted to the breast? It will probably be many years before we can answer this question. We don’t know the answer but given the emotion generated by the media, would best be removed.
3. What is the appropriate operation?
Is it simple removal and/or replace the prosthesis?
Or should all the silicone be removed, in which case the scar tissue around the prosthesis will need to be excised i.e. Capsulectomy
Many patients with PIP implants have formed a vigorous reaction to the implant (capsular contracture) and may require removal of the capsule and a new pocket dissected under the muscle.
4. Who pays?
The patient ultimately is responsible as it were their choice to have an operation for vanity.
They may claim that they were mis-sold the operation, in which case;
- The Surgeon is responsible. You will be insured against giving poor advice
- The Cosmetic Surgery Company that attracted the patient. For commercial reasons they insisted on the cheapest prosthesis to be used. They will be insured.
- The Distributor of the prosthesis in the UK should have made appropriate investigations as to the product they were selling. They will be insured.
- Ultimately PIP in France will be insured.
The majority of prosthesis implants in the UK were carried out by commercial companies. The large companies have immense turnover and spend millions of pounds advertising and coercing patients to have breast surgery with them. They must take responsibility. It would be ludicrous for them to remain in business and for the NHS to correct their commercial greed. The standing of British surgery would be better off without them.
A simple question: Why were less PIP implants sold in France?
Answer: Cosmetic Surgery is much more closely regulated and commercial clinics are far smaller providers in France.
What is required?
The government need to provide governance for the beauty industry, including skin creams, injectables, lasers, and cosmetic surgery.
Patients in the 21st century in the UK have the right to know that someone who calls themselves a Cosmetic Surgeon is in fact qualified having completed appropriate (UK training) and is not an itinerant doctor from abroad, here today gone tomorrow, or a moonlighting GP or dentist with inappropriate insurance and training.
